Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Adds Bob Hearts Abishola’s Gina Yashere

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is rounding out its teaching staff with the addition of Gina Yashere.

The star and co-creator of CBS’ recently ended Bob Hearts Abishola will recur as a Starfleet instructor in Paramount+’s forthcoming series, Variety reports.

Yashere joins Oscar winner Holly Hunter, who will star as the captain and chancellor of the titular Starfleet Academy, while Billions vet Paul Giamatti will recur in Season 1 as an as-yet-unnamed villain, “a man with an ominous past connected to one of our cadets.”

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will “follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets” — played by Bella Shepard (Wolf Pack), Kerrice Brooks (My Old Ass), George Hawkins (Tell Me Everything), Karim Diané (One Of Us Is Lying), Zo? Steiner (Significant Others) and newcomer Sandro Rosta — “as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy” and “pursue a common dream of hope and optimism,” according to the official logline. “Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”

The YA offshoot marks the fifth live-action Star Trek series (and seventh Trek series overall) to debut on Paramount+, following Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Short Treks, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Production on Season 1 begins later this summer.
