'Stargirl' trailer from Disney+ gives an 'America's Got Talent' winner her first movie role

Grace VanderWaal, winner of America’s Got Talent season 11, makes her acting debut in the first Stargirl trailer from Disney+ — and she brings her ukulele along for the ride.

No, we’re not talking about this Stargirl. We’re talking about the small screen adaptation of Jerry Spinelli’s 2000 young-adult book. VanderWaal plays the titular Stargirl, a free-spirited new girl in school with a unique look and way of being who draws the eye of Leo (Graham Verchere), a boy who spent most of life in Mica, Ariz. trying to become invisible.

In case you didn’t get the sense from this underlying message about finding oneself, the trailer is here to say this will be one uplifting story.

“With the growth of social media, there’s the strongest force to conform more than ever, more than ever, ever, ever,” VanderWaal told EW. “All young people feel that. I’ve felt that because I’m not the standard at the moment and it’s really, really important for everyone to know that if we were all supposed to be the same, we would be the same. We’re different for a reason and I don’t know why we would change that because that’s such a cool blessing.”

Stargirl, directed by Julia Hart, also stars Giancarlo Esposito, Karan Brar, Darby Stanchfield, and Maximiliano Hernández. The film will be available to stream on Disney+ on March 13.
