How Stars Transformed Maison Margiela’s Viral Spring 2024 Couture Collection From the Runway to Red Carpets: Kendall Jenner, Hunter Schafer and More
John Galliano took the helm at Maison Margiela in 2014, but perhaps his biggest viral moment with the label came a decade later.
His theatrical spring 2024 couture presentation, set in a recreation of a Jazz Age Parisian dive bar, evoked the artworks of legendary French painter Toulouse Lautrec, per WWD’s Miles Socha: “Every outfit was a marvel of imagination and artisanal craft, and by the time actress Gwendoline Christie finished the circuit in her kinky fit-and-flare latex dress, the photographers were howling ‘Bravo’ and filmmaker Baz Luhrmann joined the audience in stomping their feet with delight.”

Galliano’s latest show also took social media by storm, with fashion and beauty connoisseurs clamoring to know how makeup artist Pat McGrath created models’ “porcelain doll” makeup. It was only a month later that Marigela spring 2024 couture made its way to the red carpet, earning A-list fans like Anya Taylor-Joy, Hunter Schafer and Ariana Grande. Below, see how some stars have styled Galliano’s viral designs.
Anya Taylor-Joy
At the New York premiere of “Dune: Part Two,” Anya Taylor-Joy channeled the film’s dystopian setting in a shimmery gold gown featuring sheer overlay, a banded skirt and a halter neckline. The actress was styled by Ryan Hastings, known for his work with Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling.
Hunter Schafer
Hunter Schafer attended the premiere of “A Different Man” at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival wearing a gray off-the-shoulder cardigan paired with a fringe maxiskirt. She accessorized with the same pair of suede Tabi pumps from the runway, which are part of Margiela’s collaboration with Christian Louboutin. Schafer was dressed by stylist Dara Allen.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner sported another sheer shift from the collection at the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. The supermodel’s floor-length corseted frock features gradient lace. Jenner completed her look with crisscross Tabi Louboutin heels and diamond pave studs by Lorraine Schwartz. Dani Michelle, stylist to Hailey Bieber and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, curated Jenner’s look.
Ariana Grande
While performing at the 2024 Met Gala, Ariana Grande selected a sheer shift with a matching gloved bodysuit and corsetry. Similar to the runway look, rosette embroidery and ruffles lined the skirt of Galliano’s custom design, which was made in green to honor the singer’s starring role in “Wicked.”
Greta Gerwig
In May, “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig sported a striped frock from Margiela’s spring 2024 couture collection at the Cannes Film Festival, where she served on the esteemed jury. The filmmaker paired her blue and white midi dress with a pair of white Tabi platform heels. Stylist Karla Welch, who also counts Kristen Wiig and Sarah Paulson as clients, dressed Gerwig for the occasion.
