Who Was Daniel K. Hoh From Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19?
Hoh was a physician who wrote for Station 19. He got his start as a writer when he joined the CBS Diversity Writing Program and first worked on CBS’ Pure Genius in 2016. In 2020, he joined Station 19 at ABC as a writer and, in the final season, he had a producing title. According to Hoh’s IMDb page, he is credited as a staff writer for 41 episodes of Station 19.
Hoh was born in Potomac, Maryland and attended medical school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He moved into journalism and became a medical reporter for ABC News.
He also went on global humanitarian missions, including a trip to Mexico City with El Pozo de Via that led to his activism against human trafficking. Hoh and his wife, Deborah, also campaigned for international human rights.
In addition to writing for Station 19, he served as an ER physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
Following the news of his death, Station 19 fans reacted on X, with one person writing, “The loss of #Station19 producer Daniel Hoh to multiple myeloma at just 45 is heartbreaking. It’s a reminder of how relentless this disease is. My deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.”
In a May 6, 2021 X post, Station 19 star Jaina Lee Ortiz wrote, “This episode is beautifully written by #DanielKHoh and directed by @Harparbar… shout out to everyone involved in delivering a powerful episode. #Station19.”
Hoh responded, “Thank you @JainaLeeOrtiz for the love! This one truly came from the heart and I’m so grateful for everyone working together to bring the words to life. And it was especially an honor to have @Harparbar at the helm!”

On March 17, 2022, Zaiver Sinnett, a writer and producer on Station 19, wrote on X, “Tonight’s episode of #Station19, written by Daniel K. Hoh (also known as Dr. Dan!) and directed by Tamika Miller, honors both old and new beginnings. I can’t wait for y’all to see it. This show, cast, and crew is the absolute best.”
In a 2021 interview with Navigating Hollywood, Hoh shared his journey to becoming a TV writer. “I became interested in writing a long time ago. My first career was actually medicine, so I’m an ER doctor, but I always knew that I wanted to write and share stories,” he explained. “And being an ER doctor, you get to see a lot of things and you interact with a lot of people — you hear a lot of stories just in the course of doing your job because the ER basically attracts all comers…”
He continued, “And so as I was collecting these stories throughout my first career, I started to want to share them because I was learning a lot about life and I was seeing a lot of things. I knew that my brain was such that I would analyze these things and try to draw lessons and common themes from them, just sort of from my own growth and development, but I knew that there was probably more that I could do with it.”
Hoh explained that he took classes at UCLA and learned the ropes of TV writing. “I sort of learned how to write in the script format, bought some software, read some books… and then over the course of about like maybe eight years or so, slowly honed my craft on the side while I was working as an ER doc,” he said. “And eventually got to the point where my writing, I guess, was good enough to get the attention of some people that were decision makers in the industry. I got into one of the diversity writing programs, which then allowed me to get staffed on my first show. Station 19 is the second show that I’ve worked on now and hopefully one day I’ll be able to tell my own stories and create my own shows too.”
