Stephen Colbert accuses Trump of copyright infringement and tells him to 'lawyer up'
On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Colbert accused Donald Trump of copyright infringement because of something he said in a recent interview with the Washington Post. In the interview, while complaining about Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, Trump said: “I’m not happy with the Fed. They’re making a mistake, because I have a gut, and my gut tells me more sometimes than anybody else’s brain can ever tell me.”
As it turns out, this nonsense sounded all too familiar to Colbert. He expressed that exact sentiment in introducing the world to “Truthiness” on the very first episode of his Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report, back in 2005.
“That’s where the truth comes from, ladies and gentleman, the gut,” Colbert said as the far-right character he played on the show. “Do you know you have more nerve endings in your stomach than in your head? Look it up! Now somebody is going to say, ‘I did look that up, and it’s wrong.’ Well, mister, that’s because you looked it up in a book. Next time, try looking it up in your gut.”
Though the character he played on The Colbert Report may have taken Trump’s rip-off as a compliment, the real Stephen Colbert did not — and he had a message for the president.
“That is clear copyright infringement. He is stealing my anti-intellectual property,” Colbert said. “So tonight I am officially announcing that I am suing Donald J. Trump for stealing my old character. … You better lawyer up, buddy — and somebody better than Rudy Giuliani too. Because I will win using the precedent set by The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the landmark case First Aunt Vivian v. Second Aunt Vivian.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
