Stephen Colbert crushes Trump's 'insane' State of the Union speech
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert aired live following President Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, and Colbert made a mockery of just about everything the president said. To be sure, this is nothing out of the ordinary for Colbert, but the SOTU speech gave Colbert more fodder for comedy than a usual day. From the get go, for anyone new to the show, Colbert made his feelings about the speech known.
“He said these actual insane phrases that were actually written into the actual State of the Union,” Colbert said before playing a clip of Trump saying, “The fact is that everybody wants to be where the action is, and the United States of America is indeed the place where the action is.” “That is our nation’s new motto,” Colbert said in his best Trump voice. “America: Where the action is. Home of the loosest slots in the free world.”
Colbert also took a shot at the theme of the speech, the Great American Comeback, saying, “Nice title, but I want to point out, tonight he never actually said the great American comeback: I know you are, but what am I?”
Colbert also took this opportunity to join thousands on Twitter poking fun at the president for congratulating “the great state of Kansas” following the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory on Sunday.
After playing a clip of Trump saying the economic decay is over, Colbert said, once again in his best Trump voice, “But the years of mental decay have just begun. Where is Kansas City? Where is Missouri? I’ll never know.”
During the speech Trump stumbled over the word “sanctuary,” pronouncing it closer to “stanctuary.” Colbert couldn’t help but go a bit sophomoric and bring out the toilet humor, using words such as “smellegals” and “unpoopular” while mocking the president.
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
