Stephen Colbert questions if Don Jr. was high at RNC, calls Guilfoyle 'vengeful banshee'
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is airing live again this week, following the Republican National Convention, which is giving Colbert plenty of fodder for jokes. Though Colbert mocked several of the speakers, he spent a little extra time on Donald Trump Jr.’s girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, who gave a lively performance, to say the least.
“Next stop on the love train,” Colbert began, “was Trump Jr. girlfriend and vengeful banshee who will haunt your dreams, Kimberly Guilfoyle, who screamed this message of hope.” Colbert would later add, “When it came to the president’s agenda, she had some very nuanced screams.”
After playing a clip of the end of Guilfoyle’s speech, Colbert was nowhere to be seen for a couple seconds before slowly appearing from the bottom of the screen.
“Is the loud lady gone? I’m scared,” Colbert said. “This is the first time in my life I’ve had to turn down the volume on C-Span. God, I’m glad we already had our kids ‘cause I think I was too close to the TV. I might have been sterilized by that.
Guilfoyle quickly began trending on Twitter, as did “Cocaine” and “Coked” immediately following Trump Jr.’s appearance at the convention. It wasn’t so much the substance of Trump Jr.’s speech, but his actual appearance that Colbert, like so many Twitter users, couldn’t help but notice.
“It was his keynote address,” Colbert said, “in that he looked like he had snorted a key. So before I tell you what he said, can we zoom in on Junior’s sweaty face and wet, bloodshot eyes?”
And though Colbert came to the same conclusion as so many others, he also offered an alternative explanation.
“Either he’s high or that’s what happens when you live in the splash zone of Screamin’ Guilfoyle,” Colbert said, laughing. “Just bring a poncho.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
