American singer Steve Lawrence, half of the iconic duo Stevie & Eydie alongside his late wife Eydie Gormé, has passed away at 88 in Los Angeles due to Alzheimer’s disease, according to Deadline reports.
David Lawrence, his son and a composer, fondly remembered his father as an inspiration, highlighting his charm, humor, and musical prowess via a press release statement,“My Dad was an inspiration to so many people. But, to me, he was just this charming, handsome, hysterically funny guy who sang a lot. Sometimes alone and sometimes with his insanely talented wife. I am so lucky to have had him as a father and so proud to be his son. My hope is that his contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered for many years to come.”
Steve Lawrence – ‘I’ve Gotta Be Me’
Steve Lawrence Sr. made numerous television and film appearances, notably in “The Blues Brothers,” “The Nanny,” and “Two and a Half Men.” He was a beloved guest on Carol Burnett’s show, appearing 39 times and remembered warmly by Burnett as a dear friend.
Born as Sidney Liebowitz in Brooklyn, New York, Lawrence’s love for music blossomed early, influenced by his father’s role as a cantor. He gained fame as a teenager after winning “Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts,” leading to regular gigs on Steve Allen’s New York show.
Using the stage name “Steve Lawrence,” he launched his career with the single “Poinciana” in 1952. It was on Allen’s show, where he met Eydie Gormé, whom he married in 1957. Eydie passed away on August 10, 2013.
