'Monopoly' meets the Upside Down: First look at new 'Stranger Things'-themed board game
Dungeons & Dragons may be the game of choice for the young heroes of Stranger Things, but only one board game truly captures the singular obsession of the 1980s: real estate. That game, of course, is Monopoly, which has long since diversified from its humble Park Place origins to allow for purchases in such far-long locations as Westeros and a certain far, far away galaxy. But who wants to own moisture farms on Tatooine when you can compete for property in the up-and-coming town of Hawkins, Indiana! This fall, Hasbro Gaming is unleashing a Stranger Things Collector’s Edition version of Monopoly and Yahoo Entertainment has your exclusive first look.
Since Hawkins isn’t exactly a tourist mecca (yet), the usual houses and hotels have been replaced by stately Forts and glow-in-the-dark Hideouts, which adorn such signature locations as Benny’s Burgers and the Starcourt Mall. Hideouts will certainly come in handy considering that you’re trying to stay one step ahead of Mind Flayers and mad scientists. The usual game pieces have also been replaced by Stranger Things-appropriate totems: think Eggos, cassette tapes and Demodorg pollywogs instead of thimbles, wheelbarrows and puppies.
Oh, and be sure not to get too cocky if you grab an early lead, because drawing an Upside Down card can flip the game on a dime. After all, it wouldn’t be Monopoly, or a season of Stranger Things, without a few reversals of fortune.
Stranger Things Collector’s Edition Monopoly will be in stores this fall for $49.99 and is now available for preorder. Season 3 of Stranger Things is currently streaming on Netflix.
