The Super Mario Bros. Movie sped past $1.36 billion last year at the global box office — and the No. 1 video game film is now racing towards awards season with three nominations at the 2024 Golden Globes.

First released to buy for on-demand streaming last May, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently streaming on Netflix after leaving Peacock in December 2023. The Nintendo-inspired film earned Golden Globes nominations for best animated feature, cinematic and box office achievement and best original song in a motion picture for “Peaches” (written by by Jack Black, Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond, John Spiker).

The computer-animated adventure movie features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The video game has made music history, too, with the Library of Congress adding the Super Mario Bros. theme song to the National Recording Registry. Black’s Golden Globes-nominated breakout hit from the film, “Peaches,” also marks the comedian and Tenacious D musician’s first solo song to debut on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 56 after five weeks on the charts.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in theaters on April 5 and is the first animated film inspired by the 1985 Nintendo console game, a spinoff of the Mario Bros. arcade game. A live-action film starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper and Samantha Mathis was released in 1993. The fictional Italian twin plumbers have also inspired other game sequels and an animated TV series.
