‘Succession’ Takes Home One Last Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series
Pour one out for the Roy family: Succession’s final awards season has the popular HBO series going out on top.
On Monday night, Succession took home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, its third win in the category over the show’s four-season run. Airing in May 2023, the show’s final season swept a majority of the awards, including Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series (Sarah Snook), Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series (Kieran Culkin), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Matthew Macfadyen), and more.

The final season of Succession followed the ultimate breakdown of the Roy family and the question marks around Logan Roy’s media empire that he left behind in his death. The show starred Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfayden, Jeremy Strong, Alexander Skarsg?rd, Alan Ruck, and more.
Succession was up against The Crown, The White Lotus, The Last of Us, Better Call Saul, Yellowjackets, House of the Dragon, and Andor. The series cast racked up nominations too, with Cox, Culkin, and Strong all competing for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series; Snook going up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series; J. Smith-Cameron being nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series; and the stacked group of Braun, Macfayden, Ruck, and Skarsg?rd competing for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Rolling Stone praised the series finale, calling it a “masterful, feel-bad ending.” “Whenever a great series ends, there is an immediate temptation to wonder where it now belongs on a continuum of the best ever made, and/or to wonder how its finale stacks up against others,” the review said. “The only question we can honestly answer at this point is whether the finale felt true to the experience of watching Succession. And between that sibling argument and the concluding shot of an empty Kendall looking at the waves crashing in, it absolutely did.”
Succession recently won Best Television Series — Drama at the 2024 Golden Globes. Macfadyen and Culkin also took home awards that night for Best Actor — Drama and Best Supporting Actor — Series, Miniseries or Television Film, respectively.
The 75th Emmy Awards were originally scheduled to take place on Sept. 18, but the prolonged Hollywood strikes meant that the show was postponed four months to Jan. 15, 2024.
