With the renewed interest in the USA Network drama Suits, it seems like Patrick J. Adams'name is on everyone's lips these days. While he may be heading back into the TV universe with a Suits rewatch podcast with former co-star Sarah Rafferty, fans may know he has another woman who's been by his side even before the show initially aired in 2011 — his wife of seven years, actress Troian Bellisario.
While Patrick and Troian's marriage is just shy of a decade old, the two's romance began back in 2009 when they starred in the play Equivocation in Los Angeles. As Patrick explained to HerWorld in March 2013, the duo got close right away and started dating shortly after meeting.
"We did a play together in Los Angeles called Equivocation," he shared at the time, per People. "She was cast for the part of my romantic interest. We met and that was it."
Their romance wasn't necessarily a happily ever after just yet, because a year into dating, Patrick and Troian split up. When the opportunity came for Patrick to guest star in season 1 of Troian's show Pretty Little Liars in 2010, it wasn't just an opportunity to earn an acting credit. He was able to win her love back, which he paid tribute to in an Instagram post in October 2016 ahead of the drama's series finale.
"Today I'm pretty grateful. Because in the last 8 years I've watched Troian live and learn and grow more than most people get the chance to in a lifetime," he wrote in the caption. "You've challenged her, pushed her, asked more of her than she even knew she had and then gave us the gift of being able to celebrate her... So #PLL I wish you well and I'm sorry for any disagreements - we both meant well. But now I'm gonna take Troian's hand back and follow wherever it leads."
As Patrick and Troian's romance got back on track, both their careers skyrocketed with the success of Pretty Little Liars and Suits. Even with busy work lives, they managed to take the next step in their relationship by getting engaged in February 2014. The couple also managed to merge their personal and professional lives once again, as Troian guest starred on a season 4 episode of Suits in 2015. She played a law student/intern who caught the attention of Patrick's character Mike Ross, and her character came back the next season for one more moment against her real-life partner.
"It’s a blast,” Bellisario told People in August of that year. "It’s just always so much fun to get to play around with your partner, because you have so much in life to draw on, and you have so much trust. When he tells me that something isn’t working in a scene, I trust him to the end of the earth."
By December 2016, another element of Patrick and Troian's relationship changed when they wed in a romantic ceremony in California. The two would later attend events together as a married couple, including the wedding of Patrick's co-star Meghan Markle to Prince Harry in May 2018. But their lives inevitably changed forever when they welcomed their first child together in October 2018, with Patrick announcing Aurora's birth in an Instagram post.
Three years later in May 2021, the couple welcomed their second daughter into the world, whom they named Elliot Rowena. But their youngest child's birth came with an interesting twist, as Troian and Patrick revealed on an episode of the Katie's Crib podcast she delivered Elliot while driving in a car.
"I'm starting to have to push my seat belt away from me," Troian said at the time. "I'm in a lot of pain, but I'm also like, 'I can't be in this position anymore.'"
"I whip around, and by the time I turn my head around, Troian is already [fully on her] hands and knees... and we've gone nuclear," Patrick added. "There was no room for panic. You just need to deal with this situation."
As Patrick and Troian navigate romance and parenthood, Patrick couldn't help but gush over how his wife is with their daughters. In a sweet Mother's Day post in May 2023, he posted a photo of Troian and their girls with words of high praise.
"I don't know how you do it but it's a thing to behold," he captioned the black-and-white image. "Thank you for your patience, kindness, curiosity and wisdom. This family is so lucky to have you. Love you."
If this isn't a relationship to emulate, we don't know what is!
