Summer heats up in CT this week featuring the top comedians, concerts and country stars

Summer is when major pop acts tour arenas whether or not they have new albums out.

Janet Jackson, whose last album came in 2015, is at the Xfinity Theatre. Roger Daltrey is at Mohegan Sun Arena doing Who classics and material from decades of his underappreciated solo albums. Sarah McLachlan hasn’t released new material since 2016, though her opening act at Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater, fellow ’90s/’00’s Canadian pop icon Feist, put out an album just last year.

On the other hand country stars Brad Paisley (at Mohegan Sun Arena) and Lainey Wilson (at Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater) are hitting Connecticut weeks before their new albums are released.

Here are some of the top things to see this week.

Roger Daltrey Mohegan Sun Arena, 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville

While his bandmate Pete Townshend’s theatrical version of “Tommy” has returned to Broadway, The Who’s lead singer Roger Daltrey brings his solo act to Mohegan Sun Arena on June 23 at 7 p.m. Recent set lists find Daltrey doing not just Who classics like “Baba O’Riley” and “Magic Bus” but relatively rarities like “So Sad About Us,” “Squeeze Box” “Going Mobile” as well as Leo Sayer-penned tunes from Daltrey’s first solo album, recent collaborations with Wilko Johnson and even a song from one of Townshend’s solo albums, “Let My Love Open the Door.” $70.95-$206.50. mohegansun.com.

Pete Davidson College Street Music Hall, 238 College St., New Haven

The comedian and gossip column fodder who left “Saturday Night Live” in 2022 and has a few movies in the works, returns to New Haven’s College Street Music Hall on his “Prehab Tour.” June 23 at 7 p.m. $90.52. collegestreetmusichall.com.

Sarah McLachlan and Feist Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater, 500 Broad St., Bridgeport

For much of the 1990s, summertime meant Sarah McLachlan’s glorious multi-stage Lilith Fair tours of top female rock and pop acts. McLachlan’s back on tour, but without all the festival trappings. Samara Joy College Street Music Hall, 238 College St., New Haven

The main summer programming International Festival of Arts & Ideas is drawing to a close. One of the highlights of the last few days is the young Grammy-winning jazz singer Samara Joy, coming to the festival for an indoor concert on June 26 at 8 p.m. $42.13-$98.73. ‘Mystic Pizza the Musical’ Ivoryton Playhouse, 103 Main St., Ivoryton

One of the best-known films to take place in Connecticut has become a jukebox musical with its literally cheesy romantic comedy plot scored with ‘80s pop hits. This Ivoryton Playhouse production, June 27 through July 28, is the show’s Connecticut premiere. A national tour of the same musical but in a whole different production is coming to Waterbury next year. Performances are Wednesdays at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. ivorytonplayhouse.org.

Summer Music Series Old State House, 800 Main St., Hartford

The Friday lunchtime series of outdoor summer concerts on the lawn outside the Old State House began last week and continues into the fall. This week’s attraction is the funk band Mass-Conn Fusion. June 28 at noon. Free. wp.cga.ct.gov.

Nurse Blake Foxwoods Resort Casino, 350 Trolley Line Blvd., Mashantucket

The viral comedy star and real-life nurse, whose social media clips of wry observations of hospital work made him a national star, brings his live act back to Connecticut. The stage show at Foxwoods’ Great Cedar Showroom includes stand-up, longer storytelling and some original videos. June 28 at 6 p.m. $68.85-$79.10. foxwoods.com.

Lainey Wilson Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater, 500 Broad St., Bridgeport

Lainey Wilson won Entertainer of the Year honors at last year’s Country Music Awards. Her new album “Whirlwind” won’t be out until August, but her first single from it, “Hang Tight, Honey,” was released in May. Her new tour insists that “Country’s Cool Again” and brings the Nashville-based Wilson to Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport on June 28 at 7:30 p.m. $125-$725. hartfordhealthcareamp.com.

New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players Westport Country Playhouse, 25 Powers Court, Westport

The New York Gilbert & Sullivans have been around for decades and used to visit Connecticut often on tour, but those days are gone and it’s a rare pleasure to see them in the state, especially at such a beautiful venue as Westport Country Playhouse. The troupe will do its one-act condensation of “Pirates of Penzance,” which gives them time for selections from other Gilbert & Sullivan classics. A Day to Remember Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater, 500 Broad St., Bridgeport

The Florida pop-punk act A Day to Remember is bringing three other bands along for its big show at Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport on June 29: The Story So Far (from California), Four Year Strong (from Worcester, Massachusetts), and the Long Island hardcore act Pain of Truth. Tom’s Elton Tribute The Webster, 31 Webster St., Hartford Klein Auditorium, 910 Fairfield Ave., Bridgeport

With Elton John retired from touring, the Elton John tribute acts are having a field day. The highly respected Tom’s Elton Tribute has two Connecticut gigs this month, June 29 at 7 p.m. at the Webster in Hartford ($30, $400 VIP booth; thewebsterct.com) and June 30 at 7 p.m. at at the Klein in Bridgeport ($25-$40; theklein.org). “Tom” is British fashion designer and podcaster Tom Cridland who is friends with Elton John’s longtime drummer Nigel Olsson. He knows Elton’s style inside and out. If you can’t get to those, wait a month and Tom’s Elton will be at the Simsbury Meadows on Aug. 21.

Brad Paisley Mohegan Sun Arena, 1 Mohegan Sun Blvd., Uncasville

While you’re awaiting the new Brad Paisley album — “Son of the Mountains,” his first for the EMI Nashville label after decades of making hit records for Arista Nashville — you can see the country star live at Mohegan Sun Arena with Tyler Farr opening. The Clairvoyants Foxwoods Resort Casino, 350 Trolley Line Blvd., Mashantucket

Janet Jackson Xfinity Theatre, 77 Savitt Way, Hartford

Janet Jackson’s “Together Again” tour is her first since her pre-COVID tour marking the 30th anniversary of “Rhythm Nation.” She hasn’t released an album since 2015’s “Unbreakable,” but there was a cool documentary TV series just a couple of years ago.
