Sylvester Stallone left hanging from “Cliffhanger” reboot
Lily James and Pierce Brosnan will star in the new iteration of the mountain-climbing thriller.
Cliffhanger is rockin' on — but Sylvester Stallone isn't climbing aboard.
Production company Rocket Science announced Thursday that Lily James and Pierce Brosnan will headline a new Cliffhanger, which has begun production in Austria. Stallone, who starred in the original 1993 film, is not listed anywhere in the press release.
Stallone had previously been announced to reprise his role as mountain climber Gabe Walker in a legacy sequel directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Greenland, Angel Has Fallen). But Waugh will no longer helm the film; instead, the new Cliffhanger will now be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the seasoned action filmmaker behind movies like Non-Stop, The Commuter, and Jungle Cruise who recently worked with Brosnan on Black Adam.
Representatives for Stallone and Waugh did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.
Toby Jaffe, Neal H. Moritz, Thorsten Schumacher, and Lars Sylvest, who had all previously been announced as producers on the Stallone/Waugh iteration of the project, are still producing, and executive producers Hisham Alghanim, Ana Lily Amirpour, Gianluca Chakra, and Chance Wright are also still on board.
The film will follow James' character Naomi, who must overcome the trauma of a prior climbing accident to save her father, mountaineer Ray Cooper (Brosnan), when he is kidnapped on a trip with a billionaire's adventurous son.

James and Brosnan memorably costarred in 2018's Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which saw the actress play the young flashback version of Meryl Streep's Donna, the romantic partner of Brosnan's Sam.
The new Cliffhanger will also star Nell Tiger Free (The First Omen), Franz Rogowski (Passages), Shubham Saraf (Shantaram), Assaad Bouab (Franklin), Suzy Bemba (Poor Things), and Bruno Gouery (Emily in Paris).
Filming is underway in Austria's Lienz Dolomites, and will also take place in Germany and Italy. "Shooting our movie on location in the Dolomites using large format cameras was imperative for us to show the scope and scale of the story we’re telling," Collet-Serra said in a press release.
"We’re going to bring the audience a truly thrilling and visceral, premium theatrical experience," he continued. "Lily in particular has gone above and beyond for the role, putting in real training and learning to climb. Her dedication has allowed us to capture some incredible shots we couldn’t have achieved otherwise, and the whole crew is blown away by her commitment."

The original Cliffhanger made $255 million at the global box office, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 1993. The movie holds a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 59/100 on Metascore, and received three Oscar nominations for its sound and visual effects.

The Cliffhanger revival saga is a rare example of a single project switching from being a legacy sequel with the original star (along the lines of Creed or Top Gun: Maverick) to a standalone follow-up/reboot (like Twisters or the 2017 Mummy) with no returning characters or actors.
