Sylvester Stallone's 'Tulsa King,' now filming in OKC, sets premiere, calls for actors

The autumn debut of Sylvester Stallone's new streaming series "Tulsa King" is set, but Oklahomans still have a chance to be part of the show as filming continues in Oklahoma City.

The latest series from Oscar-nominated writer and "Yellowstone" mastermind Taylor Sheridan, "Tulsa King" will premiere with two episodes Nov. 13 on Paramount+, the streaming service revealed Wednesday.

Much like last year's successful launches of Sheridan's series "1883" and "Mayor of Kingstown," the Paramount Network also will air a sneak peek of "Tulsa King's" first episode Nov. 13 immediately following the eagerly awaited debut of "Yellowstone" Season 5.

The second episode of "Tulsa King" will air behind "Yellowstone" Nov. 20 on the Paramount Network, too.

All remaining episodes of "Tulsa King" will be available to stream weekly on Sundays exclusively on Paramount+.

Who is Stallone playing in 'Tulsa King?'

"Tulsa King' centers on Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone), a 75-year-old New York mobster newly released after serving a 25-year prison sentence. He is quickly and unceremoniously banished by his former boss' son to set up shop in Tulsa.

Realizing that his mafia family may not have his best interests at heart, Manfredi slowly creates his own “crew” from a group of unlikely characters, who help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that, for the New Yorker, might as well be another planet.

The series is considered Stallone's first big lead role in a television show, and he's also listed as an executive producer. Over the course of his long career, the three-time Oscar nominee has guest-starred on a number of TV series — including "Kojak," "Police Story," "The Muppet Show," "Las Vegas" and "This Is Us" — but Stallone is primarily known for his many cinematic credits, particularly in action movies.

Sheridan recently told Variety that it took about a week to come up with the idea for "Tulsa King," pen the script for the pilot and pitch it directly to Stallone.

“I was talking with a producer, and it’s COVID,” Sheridan told the trade publication. “Everyone’s kind of going stir-crazy. He was asking me about ideas. I said, ‘Look, all you need, in my opinion, to have an interesting TV show is take a really fascinating character and drop them in a world that we don’t know anything about.’”

Who else is working on 'Tulsa King?'

Along with Stallone, "Tulsa King" stars Andrea Savage (“I'm Sorry”), Martin Starr (“Silicon Valley”), Max Casella (“The Tender Bar”), Domenick Lombardozzi (“The Irishman”), Vincent Piazza (“Boardwalk Empire”), Jay Will (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), A.C. Peterson (“Superman & Lois”) and Garrett Hedlund (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”).

The show's creator, Sheridan serves as executive producer alongside Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Terence Winter (“The Wolf of Wall Street," “The Sopranos”), who is at the helm as "Tulsa King's" showrunner and writer.

"Tulsa King" is the most recent addition to Sheridan’s burgeoning slate on Paramount+, which includes other anticipated series like "1932," "Lioness," "Land Man" and another planned show with Oklahoma ties, "1883: The Bass Reeves Story."

How can Oklahomans be involved in 'Tulsa King?'

Although some lensing was done earlier this spring in Tulsa and Stallone was spotted this week filming in New York City, the production is primarily centered in Oklahoma City, where filming continues.

"This is a major production, bringing high-paying jobs and economic impact to our city.  And it’s pretty cool, too!" OKC Mayor David Holt tweeted in April.

Initially named "Kansas City," the series represents a big win for Oklahoma's growing film and television industry.

Norman-based Freihofer Casting issued a new casting call Wednesday seeking performers to play a biker gang, Italian mobsters, blue-collar Mass Transit Authority employees, a cocktail waitress and dispensary workers as filming continues in OKC in the next few weeks.

Pay for background performers on the project is a guarantee of $100 for up to 10 hours of filming. Anything over 10 hours on a shoot day will incur overtime.

A free, pre-engagement COVID-19 test is required prior to filming. For more information, check out the casting call at https://www.facebook.com/FreihoferCasting.
