Symbolic, Political Style Statements Are on the Emmys 2024 Red Carpet With D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Nicola Coughlan, Richard Gadd and More
While several A-list attendees and stars made bold fashion statements on the red carpet, a few guests at the 2024 Emmy Awards opted for subtle symbolic messages attached to their wardrobe, makeup and accessory choices. Pins and makeup with symbolic meaning were themes on the red carpet at the awards show in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Ahead, see how Nichola Coughlan, Alan Cumming and more stars used their sartorial statements to send symbolic messages on ongoing political, humanitarian and social issues.

Richard Gadd
Attached to the lapel of his suit jacket, Emmy winner for “Baby Reindeer” Richard Gadd wore a white pin with black writing that read “We Are Survivors.” The statement references a charity in the United Kingdom that supports male-identifying victims of abuse.
“I’ll always give them a shout out,” Gadd told The Guardian last April, adding, “because they’ve helped me tremendously down the years, and they say breaking the silence is the first step. Sometimes I speak to male survivors, and I’m not an advice giver or a professional, but the first advice is: break the silence. Talk to someone, and if that’s too scary, just write it down, process it into something. Because I think the more you get it out, the smaller it becomes.”
Nicola Coughlan
“Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan wore her Artists4Ceasefire pin on the Emmys red carpet. The pin is a symbol that advocates for a ceasefire in Gaza.
“It’s very important for me because I feel like I’m a very privileged person,” Coughlan told USA Today last May. “I’m doing my dream job, and I’m getting to travel the world, but then I’m hyper-aware of what’s happening in Rafah at the moment.”
Devery Jacobs
“Reservation Dogs” star Devery Jacobs also wore an Artists4Ceasefire pin attached to the lapel of their look for the 2024 Emmy Awards, as well.
D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai
“Reservation Dogs” Emmy nominated-actor D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai had a red hand print over his mouth on the Emmy Awards red carpet. The handprint is a symbol of solidarity for missing and murdered Indigenous Women, per non-profit Native Hope’s official website.
The symbol “stands for all the missing sisters whose voices are not heard. It stands for the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis. It stands for the oppression and subjugation of Native women who are now rising up to say #NoMoreStolenSisters.”
Ido Samuel
Ido Samuel, star of Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” wore a yellow ribbon on his lapel. While the yellow ribbon has been attributed to raising awareness for suicide prevention and veterans affairs, it’s taken on meaning as a symbol of solidarity for the hostages held by Hamas.
“It’s hard to be here at a happy occasion knowing there are people suffering,” Samuel told Variety on the red carpet at the awards show.
Alan Cumming
Actor Alan Cumming wore a pin on the lapel of his Emmys red carpet look that featured the colors of the transgender pride flag. Attached to the blue, pink and white ribbon was a medal, which read, “For Military Merit.”
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, celebrates TV’s best with FX’s “Shōgun” and “The Bear” leading nominations. Jelly Roll is set to perform his song “I Am Not Okay” during the show’s In Memoriam tribute.
