T&C Exclusive: Watch the Trailer for 'Widow Clicquot'
The history inside a bottle of champagne has to do with more than just the bubbly’s vintage. The new film Widow Clicquot tells the story of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot, who married into a winemaking family and in 1772, after being widowed, took control of the business, making her a pioneer among the (mostly male) entrepreneurs of her time and changing the champagne industry forever.
“Widow Clicquot is timely, because essentially the film is an imagining of Barbe-Nicole’s arrival into her power as a force to be reckoned with,” says director Thomas Napper. “It’s not a film I’ve seen before, and I think for audiences now it’s surprising and confronting to realize that something they thought they knew, Veuve Clicquot, was truly created by a woman, a widow—and at that time it was utterly ground-breaking for a woman to own and run a company.”
Producer Christina Weiss Lurie adds, “I was drawn to the story of this bad-ass woman who was entrepreneurial, resourceful, intelligent, and bodacious—especially for the early 1800s. It is a story as relevant today as it was almost 200 years ago.”
Widow Clicquot, which stars Haley Bennett as Barbe-Nicole and Tom Sturridge as her husband, Fran?ois, will be in theaters on July 19. Here, Town & Country has an exclusive reveal of the trailer for the film, which won raves out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. So, pop a bottle, pour a glass, and take in a first look at a film that might forever change the way you think of champagne. Cheers!
