On a June episode of PEOPLE in 10, Menzel, 53, gave an update on Walker and how she's been navigating his teenage years.
"He’s great. He’s a teenager, but he still hugs me once in a while so I’ll take that," she teased.
"What surprises me is just how mercurial it is, one minute they want nothing to do with you, and the next minute they really show you how much they need you," she continued.
"You really have to be on your toes and be willing to get out of their way and out of your own way and not take things too personally. Know that they feel your love but they also need their space."
A year prior, Diggs shared a photo taken by Walker on Instagram. The selfie showed the teenager with his hair braided, staring at the camera as his dad tried to take his braids out with the help of a ballpoint pen.
"I’m channeling mommy here. We love and miss u, mama. ??," he captioned the shot.
When asked about co-parenting with Menzel during a 2022 interview with PEOPLE, the Best Man actor had nothing but praise for the Frozen star.

"She runs the show," he said. "She has a career and she has her own relationships and she still makes sure that Walker is where he needs to be when he needs. He's got the best coaches and the best teachers, and we're at the best schools, and it's all because of her."
Terry McMillan Presents: Forever premieres Saturday, Aug. 24, at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
