Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, and James Corden will reportedly star in big-screen version of 'Cats'
If Taylor Swift is looking for a muse ahead of her next film role, she’s got two right at home: her Insta-famous cats, Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson.
Deadline has confirmed that Swift has signed on for the film version of Broadway’s famed feline musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. Tom Hooper — who is said to have nearly cast the pop star in his 2012 big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables — will direct.
Swift — whose limited acting résumé includes roles in The Giver and Valentine’s Day — won’t be the only singer in the cast. Daily Mail has reported that American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson — who won an Oscar for Dreamgirls — will play Grizabella, aka “Glamour Cat.”
James Corden and Ian McKellen — both of whom are Tony winners, albeit for plays rather than musicals — will round out the all-star cast, and filming is reportedly slated to begin this fall. Swift’s “Reputation” tour is due to wrap up November 21.
The original Cats musical — based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats — premiered in 1981. It follows a gang of cats named the Jellicles, and is famous for its plaintive ballad “Memory.” It is the fourth-longest-running Broadway show.
