Taylor Swift was named Spotify’s Global Top Artist of 2023 and she decided to give her fans a gift to celebrate the honor.
“We’ve seriously had THE MOST fun this year out there on tour and now this. You can finally listen EVERYWHERE now.
“You’re Losing Me” was originally released on May 26, 2023 as a bonus track from Taylor’s 2022 album Midnights. The song was initially only available to fans who purchased a deluxe version of Midnights at one of the singer’s Eras tour concerts in New Jersey. It was also briefly available as a limited time digital download in Taylor’s merch store.
Now that the song can be streamed everywhere, fans are buzzing about the meaning behind the song and the hints it gives about Taylor’s split from Joe Alwyn!
What Is the Meaning of Taylor Swift’s ‘You’re Losing Me’?
The lyrics of “You’re Losing Me” point to a problem between a couple, with Taylor specifically mentioning the concept of marriage.
“And I wouldn’t marry me either / Pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her,” she sings in one verse. “And I’m fading thinking / Do something, babe, say something / Lose something, babe, risk something / Choose something, babe, I got nothing to believe, unless you’re choosing me.”
Another part of the track hears the “Lavender Haze” singer questioning whether she should stay in the relationship or leave it.
“Do I throw out everything we built or keep it?” Taylor sings in another verse. “I’m getting tired even for a phoenix / Always rising from the ashes / Mending all her gashes / You might just have dealt the final blow.”
Throughout the single, the Grammy Award winner reflects on telling her romantic partner that she tried talking to them about her issues.
“I glared at you with storms in my eyes / How can you say that you love someone you can’t tell is dying?” Taylor asks. “I sent you signals and bit my nails down to the quick / My face was gray, but you wouldn’t admit that we were sick.”
The bridge of the song explores whether or not the person she is singing to ever listened to her.
“I gave you all my best of me, my endless empathy,” she insists. “And all I did was bleed as I tried to be the bravest soldier / Fighting in only your army. The front lines don’t you ignore me / I’m the best thing at this party.”
Is Taylor Swift’s ‘You’re Losing Me’ About Joe Alwyn?
Taylor has not publicly explained who inspired the song. However, Swifties are convinced the track explains the reason why she and the Favourite actor broke up. The Pennsylvania native has written songs about plenty of other exes in the past and penned multiple happy songs about her romance with Joe when they were dating.
Fans have most notably pointed to the “I wouldn’t marry me either” lyric when theorizing that the track was written about Joe. Taylor and Joe dated for more than six years and did not walk down the aisle.
Although it’s unclear when Taylor penned “You’re Losing Me,” a top fan theory is that she wrote the song after releasing Midnights in October 2022, which is why it wasn’t part of the original album. Midnights did feature happier songs seemingly about Joe, including “Lavender Haze,” “Snow on the Beach,” “Mastermind,” “Paris, “Labyrinth” and “The Great War.”
Why Did Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Break Up?
In early April 2023, multiple outlets reported that Taylor and Joe decided to call it quits on their relationship after dating for six years.
Shortly afterward, a source exclusively told Life & Style that the split was hard for the “Lover” crooner, but “some in Taylor’s inner circle aren’t so surprised by the breakup.”
“They feel bad, but Taylor would never want anyone to feel sorry for [her], especially her fans,” the insider added.
Who Is Taylor Swift Dating Now?
Not long after news of Taylor and Joe’s split broke, the “Anti-Hero” singer was briefly linked to Matty Healy. They spent time together in New York City and he was photographed at some of her Eras tour shows in May 2023.
The fling was short-lived and by the end of that summer, Taylor was dating Travis Kelce. She met Travis after he attended his Eras tour show in July 2023 and publicly admitted that he wished he’d gotten a chance to talk to her after the show. Taylor reached out to the NFL star and they met up for their first date in New York.
While performing in Argentina in November 2023, Taylor even changed a song lyric that was originally about Joe to be about Travis. In her song “Karma,” she sings, “Karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me,” referencing Joe’s career as an actor. However, with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end in the audience, Taylor changed up the lyrics to, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me.”
