Taylor Swift signs deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, says leadership supports 'women’s empowerment'
Taylor Swift is making moves for her music.
The singer, 30, signed a global publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group on Thursday, according to a news release.
The agreement, which is effective immediately, strengthens her relationship with Universal Music family. Universal Music Group already serves as Swift’s exclusive worldwide recorded music partner and UMG’s Republic Records serves as her U.S. label partner.
In the release, Swift said she was "proud" to extend her partnership with the company, specially highlighting Jody Gerson, the "first woman to run a major music publishing company."
"Jody is an advocate for women’s empowerment and one of the most-respected and accomplished industry leaders." she added.
She also mentioned Troy Tomlinson, whom she described as "a passionate torchbearer for songwriters" who she has been working with for "over half (her) life."
Swift was originally under Sony/ATV Music Publishing and was the youngest artist to be signed by the publishing house in her early teens.
The deal comes after a tumultuous year for Swift and the ownership of her music.
The singer has been publicly feuding with music executive Scooter Braun after she claimed his purchase of Big Machine Label Group (and with it, her existing catalog of music before her latest album "Lover"), came as an unwelcome surprise.
In a lengthy Tumblr post in July 2019, Swift called the deal her "worst case scenario," accusing Braun of subjecting her to "incessant, manipulative bullying" for years and "controlling a woman who didn't want to be associated" with him.
Braun and Big Machine CEO Scott Borchetta slammed Swift's comments, arguing she actually did have prior knowledge of the sale and didn't "learn about it as it was announced to the world," as she wrote in the post.
