Taylor Swift's 'Cats' song has been shut out of the 2020 Oscars already
Taylor Swift’s original song for her upcoming movie, Cats, won’t be a 2020 Oscar contender after all.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which bestows the awards, on Monday released the short list of works under consideration in musical categories. Swift, who was expected to be nominated for the track “Beautiful Ghosts,” which she co-wrote with Oscar winner Andrew Lloyd Webber, was not mentioned.
Swift portrays the feline Bombalurina in the film version of the Broadway smash, which Weber composed before it was originally staged in 1981. The “Lover” singer’s duties also include singing the song “Macavity,” featuring co-star Idris Elba, according to the soundtrack description.
While T. Swift was absent from the Oscar short list, Beyoncé made the cut with her song “Spirit,” from The Lion King, as did Pharrell Williams with the Disney film’s “Never Too Late.” Elton John was shortlisted for two songs in the same category: Lion King’s “Never too Late” and Rocket Man’s “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again.” Radiohead’s Thom Yorke is in the running for a nomination with his Motherless Brooklyn tune “Daily Battles.”
In all, 75 songs were entered in the category. Just five will be announced as official Oscar nominees on Jan. 13.
While the development might temporarily disappoint Swift and her fans, the truth is that the singer must be running short of space by now to keep all of her trophies. In addition to her shelf of Grammys — 10, to be exact — she cleaned up at last month’s fan-voted American Music Awards. She won six awards that night, including Artist of the Decade, boosting her to a grand total of 29 AMAs, the most any other artist has ever won.
Swift has already been nominated for a Golden Globe for the Cats tune in the best original song category.
Her fans were more focused Monday night on her red carpet appearance in an Oscar de la Renta gown at the world premiere of Cats, which opens Friday.
