Team USA Olympic Swimmer Ryan Murphy Surprised With Baby Gender Reveal After Winning Bronze
Team USA Olympic swimmer Ryan Murphy got the surprise of a lifetime after competing in the men’s 100m backstroke — and it wasn’t his bronze medal. After a successful night at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, in which he collected his seventh medal of his career, he met his wife Bridget Konttinen in the stands — and she had an important message for her husband!
“Ryan it’s a girl,” read a sign in her hand, revealing to Murphy the gender of the baby the couple is expecting. As if the thrill of placing in the Olympics wasn’t exhilarating enough, learning he was going to be a girl dad was the cherry on top!
“We had been guessing for a couple weeks now what the gender was gonna be, so that was a great way to find out,” said Murphy per NBC Olympics. “I think that just kind of like lit me up and really brought this night to a whole-‘nother level.”
As reported by Fox News, that was the first instance he had learned the gender of his baby, and he and his wife had their bets placed on it being a boy.
"We both — we honestly both thought it was going to be a boy. And everyone — like everyone — we were talking to, they thought it was going to be a boy."
Murphy took to social media after the fact with the happy news, and the comment section was full of well wishes from fans and spectators. "I think it made his very special moment EVEN BETTER! He loves his wife and baby and to share that experience was AMAZING. Love to him and his family!" one happy user commented on Instagram, while another added, "What an exciting time for him and his family!"
"Wow that's amazing! You can feel their joy through the screen," another celebrator wrote, and another chimed in, "Awwwww!!!! Congratulations Ryan!!! You did great!!!!!"
A few fans even gave Murphy some name ideas, with one suggesting that the expecting parents name their daughter "Paris" after the 2024 Summer Olympic host city!

In 2021, he explained to CNBC Make It that his love for water began when he and his family moved to Florida while he was a youngster.

The accomplished athlete has broken world records and swam alongside Olympic greats like Michael Phelps.
He won his first gold medals at the 2016 games in the 100m and 200m backstroke and has continued to rack up wins over the course of his career — and this year’s Games are proving to be no different than his previous two.
