That 'Neighbors 2' Chase Scene Was Inspired by 'Mad Max,' 'Bourne,' and 'Crank'

One of these scenes is not like the others. There is a full-on Jason Bourne-esque chase sequence in the new comedy sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising that’s in theaters now. And it feels distinctly more epic than the rest of the film’s college-party shenanigans.

To capture the scene, which takes place at a college football tailgate party as Mac (Seth Rogen), Kelly (Rose Byrne), Teddy (Zac Efron), and friends attempt to steal a copious amount of weed, director Nicholas Stoller hired Crank co-director Mark Neveldine, who famously shoots his frenetic action set-pieces while whizzing around on rollerblades.

“He’ll like rollerblade backwards, and a lot of the awesome shots [in the sequence] are from that,” Stoller told Yahoo Movies (watch above). You can also thank Neveldine for the film’s very intimate moments with Efron. “He also did that thing with the camera where he shoved it over and over into Zac’s crotch when Zac was doing the dance.”

Stoller said the sequence, which took four days to shoot, was inspired not only by the Jason Bourne movies, but also last summer’s hit Mad Max: Fury Road, especially in terms of the smoke effects used.

“That was so fun,” said Byrne. “It was this really weird, wild sequence. We’re all in bizarre costumes. It had a certain madness about it.” Also a certain Mad Max-ness.
