Latest 'The Masked Singer' eliminee is a Teen Wolf... in Hawk's clothing
"I was very flattered that you guys thought I was Billie Joe Armstrong," said the TV actor who moonlights as a pop/punk singer.
The Masked Singer aired a special pre-Halloween, Harry Potter-themed episode Wednesday, and while no one cosplayed as, say, Lord Voldemort or a slytherin snake, Group B’s contestants definitely got in the spirit with a series of magical, mystical cover songs. However, as much as the Hawk tried to work his wizardry with a punk/pop arrangement of the Police’s “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” he landed in the bottom two. And after he lost his Smackdown sing-off of Lady Gaga’s “Monster” against the even harder-rocking Tiki, it was time for him to slyther home.
The judges guessed guessed Hawk might be Ryan Phillippe, Chad Michael Murray, Andrew Garfield, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, Cole Sprouse, Pete Wentz, Corey Feldman, or Austin Butler. A Miley Cyrus clue had me thinking this pop-punker might be Metro Station’s Mason Musso or Trace Cyrus. But the rawkin’ Hawk turned out to former Teen Wolf actor Tyler Posey, which no one guessed, even though Tyler has played in emo bands like Disappearing Jamie, PVMNTS, and Five North. I suppose it would have been too obvious if Tyler had dressed as an actual wolf.
"I was very flattered that you guys thought I was Billie Joe Armstrong," Tyler said, although he admitted to the judges that because he's so competitive, he was "a little hurt" that he was cut from the competition.
OK, so I didn’t guess the Hawk correctly, but I’m supremely confident about my other Group B guesses this week, including the identity of the show’s newest competitor, Sea Queen. Marvel at my guessing wizardry below.
Husky, “Superfreak”
“The Husky got super-freaky… and we liiiiked it!” Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg howled. This dawg/dogg may be “getting on in dog years,” but he still had the raw canine energy of a sexy soul superstar tonight.
The clues: As a young pup, the Husky was teased for being skinny, so he bulked up and transformed into a husky heartthrob. Eventually he “skyrocketed up the charts,” “inspired some lovemaking,” and “had a strange effect on the female species” (who would “shower him with love — and sometimes their underthings”). Other clues have included a red rose, a deck of playing cards, a chocolate bar, a merry-go-round, a platinum album, Mother Nature from The Masked Singer Season 6 (aka Vivica A. Fox), and a “connection to P. Diddy.”
Judges’ guesses:Tank, Ginuwine, Brian McKnight.
My guess: I am certain that Nicole Scherzinger is correct. This is indeed 53-year-old R&B sex symbol and “Carousel” crooner Ginuwine, who co-starred in 2015’s Chocolate City with Vivica and collaborated with Diddy on “I Need a Girl (Part 2).” I suppose it would’ve been too obvious if he’d dressed as a Pony, but the clues all easily add up, regardless.
Tiki, “Magic”
This rocktail went retro with Pilot’s 1974 powerpop classic, and there was magic in the air. “I felt like for a moment Freddie Mercy came back – that’s how powerful that vocal was,” raved Nicole.
The clues: Tiki “always wanted to be a rock star,” and he achieved his dream — selling “millions of records” and touring the world. “You’ve got to be brave to be front-and-center of the types of stages I command,” he said. But then Tiki’s “loose mouth” got him in trouble, and he feared his “career would be poured down the drain.” He eventually “cleaned up his act,” “struck out on his own,” and gave up his “hard-partying” ways to focus on fatherhood. Visual clues included a monkey, the word “snooze,” a skull, a globe, and a piano. Tiki also said, “If you’re ever feeling bluesy, you can come to me for a good laugh.”
Judges’ guesses: Dave Grohl, Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Daltrey, Robert Plant. (Dude. It’s not Robert Plant. Stop it. And if you want to hear Daltrey on this show, just listen to the Who song that plays every time a celebrity is unmasked.)
My guess: I know this is Skid Row’s loudmouthed former frontman, the Savage Animal himself, “Monkey Business” rocker and reality-TV regular Sebastian Bach. The man has cosplayed as Freddie Mercury on Sing Your Face Off, and he covered Lady Gaga on that show too, so dressing up as a Freddie-voiced tropical drink and singing “Monster” really isn’t much of a stretch for him. And as this 2017 laughter-inducing Yahoo Entertainment interview proves, the man is friggin’ funny. I remember him!
Sea Queen, “Love Potion No. 9”
This week’s wild-card addition to the Group B cast sounded like a legend, like an old-school diva. “There’s a global superstar under that mask,” proclaimed Nicole, and Robin Thicke agreed, saying, “Yes, that is a special voice.”
The clues: This creature has always been a wild card, starting when she was fired from her first job as a museum tour guide and kicked out of “fancy boarding school” as a teenager. She’s a “triple-threat” (“comedy, writing singing — I’ve done it all”), has dabbled in many different genres of music, and is about to go on tour. Visual clues included a spider, a handbag painted with fashion-model silhouettes, and a ‘90s-style portable CD boombox.
Judges’ guesses: Erykah Badu, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Lewis.
My guess: From the distinctively special voice alone, I’d guess this as genre-hopping ‘90s star Macy Gray. But the clues add up too: Macy attended boarding school, studied screenwriting at USC, has had roles in multiple comedy shows and the first Spider-Man movie, and is hitting the road next month. She also competed as the Atlantis on The Masked Singer Australia, and the Sea Queen sounds a lot like that similarly aquatic contestant. This a watertight case!
