'The View' co-hosts defend U.S. women's national soccer team celebrations after historic win: 'These women should be celebrated'
The co-hosts of The View spoke out in support of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team after they came under fire for the way they celebrated their recent win. The team defeated Thailand’s team in a 13-0 game, and the players were seen publicly high-fiving and hugging, actions some felt showed poor sportsmanship.
Panelist Meghan McCain saw it differently. “I don’t understand why when women succeed we question how they do it. Men just get to succeed. They just get to win,” she said. “Men throw those buckets of Gatorade. They do some high fives and get criticized?” she added.
McCain went on to note her further frustration with the apparent double standard. “When we’re women, we’re either ‘ice bitches’ or ‘hysterical’ and we get nothing in between. I’m sick of it!”
“Don’t NFL players put on big, choreographed numbers after they score in the end zone? What’s the problem?” asked co-host Whoopi Goldberg. “I don’t understand what’s the problem.”
Goldberg also revealed there’s a major pay disparity between the women’s national team and the men’s, despite the women’s team having set the record for the most-watched soccer game in U.S. history in 2015. “For that, they get paid 38 cents on the dollar compared to male players.” McCain chimed in with another fact, “The men didn’t even qualify for the World Cup this year! They didn’t!”
Many viewers on Twitter agreed that the women’s team should be able to celebrate how they choose, and deserve equal pay:
It’s called hard work. Obviously, USA Women’s Soccer team put in more work than Thailand. And it showed on the field when it mattered. They deserve to celebrate as much as they want, especially, racking up 13 points to a shut out. Called being, “WINNERS” https://t.co/Lk2sDqLFKH

Others felt the panel was wrong, and that the players should have acted more humbly despite their big victory:
I love watching The View but ladies.......Any soccer team beating the opponent 13 to 0 at some point has to show their classy side and stop celebrating. Anyone that has played organized team sports knows this Very disappointed in the hosts Google "running up the score"
