It's been six years since Crazy Rich Asians premiered, and while there have long been discussions of a sequel, it's unclear if that film is still happening. However, in a new interview with Variety, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max, revealed that a Crazy Rich Asians TV series is in development.

Here's what we know so far.

It could be about Astrid.

In 2022, Deadline reported there was a Crazy Rich Asians spin-off in the works about Astrid and Charlie's romance, which comes from the second novel in the series, China Rich Girlfriend. "Emmy nominated Barry producer and scribe Jason Kim is set to pen a spinoff of Crazy Rich Asians which will center around the Gemma Chan character of Astrid Young Teo and her romance with Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr. in the original movie. I hear that Kim came in with a dynamite pitch for the lovebirds’ story, and Warner Bros. swooned for it. The project is in early development." It's unclear if this spin-off is the same TV series that Bloys referenced.

There's an entire trilogy to draw from.

Author Kevin Kwan penned three Crazy Rich Asians novels, inspired by his family from Singapore. "Crazy Rich Asians may be fiction, but given the situation I grew up in, I've had an unparalleled view into the very real world it depicts," he told T&C in 2018. "I come from an old establishment family from Singapore. Our family tree goes back to the year 946. Three families intermarried: mine, the Kwans; my grandmother’s, the Ohs; and my grandfather’s, the Hus, which made for a sprawling clan that helps inspire the stories in my novels and what you see onscreen in Crazy Rich Asians."
