There's another Sherlock Holmes TV show in the works: Young Sherlock Homes will star Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular detective at age 19, in a new Prime Video series from Guy Richie.
The official logline reads that it is an "action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character. At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever."
Here's everything we know so far about the Young Sherlock show:
It's based off Andy Lane's Young Sherlock Holmes novels.
Lane's novels begin when a 14-year-old Sherlock Holmes is staying with his aunt and uncle for the summer. Then, when two locals die from symptoms that resemble the plague, Holmes decides to investigate what really killed them, aided by his new tutor. "So begins Sherlock's true education in detection, as he discovers the dastardly crimes of a brilliantly sinister villain of exquisitely malign intent..." There are eight books in the series; the last one was published in September 2015.
It marks Guy Ritchie's return to the world of Sherlock Holmes.
Richie will direct and executive produce the series.
It's as yet unclear if Young Sherlock is in the same universe as his films, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular detective. (Watch a trailer for his 2009 film above.)
"In Young Sherlock we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before," Ritchie said in a statement. "We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love."
Hero Fiennes Tiffin will star in the titular role.
Tiffin, the nephew of actor Ralph Fiennes, is perhaps best known for playing a young Lord Voldemort in the sixth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He's also appeared in After and its three sequels, The Woman King, and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
The other cast members are as follows:
Dónal Finn will play Moriarty
Colin Firth will play Sir Bucephalus Hodge
Natasha McElhone will play Cordelia Holmes, Sherlock's mother
Joseph Finnes (Tiffin's uncle) will play Silas Holmes, Sherlock's father
Zine Tseng will play Princess Gulun Shou’an
No other cast members have been announced yet.
There's no premiere date yet.
There will be eight episodes in the first season, and it will air on Prime Video. "This exciting, new chapter about one of the world’s best-known literary characters, will delight our global customers with its captivating storytelling," Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement. "With the brilliant creative team, led by Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill, we will explore untold mysteries of how young Sherlock found his way to a life of truth-seeking."
We'll update this as soon as we learn more.
