Things get rocky on 'This Is Us' after Sylvester Stallone gives sage advice
On This Is Us, Kevin Pearson was having the time of his life starring in a Ron Howard movie opposite legendary action star Sylvester Stallone. “I’m on a movie set, saving Sylvester Stallone’s life?” stated a mind-blown Kevin to his twin sister, Kate, who was visiting the set. Kevin then launched into his best “Rocky” impression, before Rocky Balboa himself, Sylvester Stallone, casually walked up behind him, stating “Not so bad.” Kevin wasn’t the only one who attempted his best Rocky impression in front of Sly. In fact, Kate really got into it as she sang Bill Conti’s “Gonna Fly Now” before leading into her narrated screenplay version of Rocky.
It’s no surprise that Sly, a veteran of the industry, had so much wisdom to share with Kate when she expressed her reservations concerning her singing career. After Kate asked, “You really don’t think I’m too old?” Sly responded, “No, it really doesn’t matter what other people think. Seriously. No. I’ll tell you what people didn’t think. They didn’t think I could write Rocky in three days; it happened. I’ll tell you something else: They didn’t think I could act in it. Guess what — it happened. Sometimes people can be real idiots.” Kate also shared with Sly the fact that her dad, Jack Pearson, was a huge fan of his, which is why the Pearson kids grew up watching Rocky.
When it came time to Kevin’s big scene with Sly, Sly told Kevin, “She mentioned your father a little bit. He’d be really proud of you. Look at this … it’s gotta be tough not having him here. I get it,” as he motioned to the major film set they were standing on. Of course, like Kate, Kevin also gets uncomfortable talking about his late father. So after realizing that Kevin was totally shutting down, Sly told him, “In my experience, Kevin, there’s no such a thing as ‘a long time ago’. There’s only memories that mean something and memories that don’t.”
Unfortunately, after Sly’s sage advice, things got a little rocky for Kevin, who totally choked once Ron Howard yelled, “Action!”
