Tiffany Haddish reveals painful relationship with injured mother in new docu-series 'Uncensored'
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles in the ’80s and ’90s, comedian Tiffany Haddish suffered levels of trauma that were anything but humorous — including a pivotal car accident with her family that resulted in her mother suffering brain damage and Haddish eventually being put in foster care.
In this exclusive clip from Uncensored, a new celebrity autobiography series, Haddish describes the pain of having to deal with her mother’s rehabilitation after the accident. Just 8 years old at the time, Haddish found herself needing to help her mother re-learn basic skills such as walking, talking, and eating. “Basically everything she had taught me up to that age, I was teaching her,” Haddish says.
Her mother’s injuries were so severe that they left her unable to articulate herself, and forced her to resort to violence at times. “She would get so mad she’d hit you,” Haddish says. “She couldn’t express herself… I can take a punch, man. You can’t never knock me out.”
However, Haddish says she is actually grateful for that experience, as it informed her growth in her career path. “Because of that, I was always trying to figure out ways to make her laugh,” she explains.
