How did they get there?
Your votes this week narrowed the original field of 16, which was set from Dispatch readers' top recommendations on our Facebook and Instagram pages. There were some close first-round contests.
Terita's, the 65-year-old carryout in North Linden, received the most nominations but edged Clintonville and Old North Columbus favorite Hounddog's Pizza by just six votes, 706 to 700. The 1,406 total votes cast was the most of any of the first-round matchups.
Tommy's Pizza in Upper Arlington received the most votes of any restaurant in the first round and defeated Black Dog Pizzeria of Dublin, 981 to 335. Count Black Dog, though, in the "just stoked to be included category," as they wrote on Facebook. The restaurant just reopened on March 5 after a fire in September.
Another close matchup between first-round winner The Original Josie's Pizza of Franklinton and Classic Pizza in Westerville was decided by 13 votes, 595 to 582.
Only two businesses that advanced to the second round of voting were opened in this century. Paulie Gee's, part of a Brooklyn-based chain of eight pizza restaurants, opened in the Short North in 2016. Paulie Gee's defeated Bazemore Pizza Co., which opened last year in Upper Arlington, 699 to 488.
JT's Pizza & Pub, which opened in 2007 on the Northwest Side, defeated Cardinal Pizza of Westerville, 759 to 456.
In other first-round results, college favorite Adriatico's, which has locations near Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati, topped Rubino's Pizza of Bexley, 802 to 476; The Pizza House, on the North Side, defeated Downtown's Slammers, 920 to 387; and Rotolo's Italian Pizzeria near Grandview Heights finished ahead of Stadz Pizzeria of Blacklick, 871 to 474.
Let the second round begin!
Voting for the second round starts now and continues through Friday at noon. Your next round of votes will determine the final four central Ohio pizza places in this year's contest.
