Al Roker of Today got an exclusive sneak peek inside Paisley Park, the studio where the late legendary musician Prince used to record. The studio, located in Chanhassen, Minn., just outside of Minneapolis, has been turned into a museum and will be open to the public beginning on Oct. 6. Much of the studio has been left exactly as it was when Prince passed away nearly six months ago, including handwritten notes, a microphone right where Prince had used it, and plenty of instruments.

One of the rooms at the compound was once a basketball court that Prince turned into a performance area called the NPG Music Club, named after his longtime backing band The New Power Generation. It’s a large yet intimate space where Prince would entertain friends and sometimes perform for small groups.

Besides various instruments and awards on display, some of Prince’s clothes will also be available for fans to see. And Prince had a lot of clothes.

“All of his clothes were custom-made. Every piece of clothing he has. All 6,000 of them,” said Angie Marchese, the archivist at Paisley Park.

There’s also an entire room dedicated exclusively to Purple Rain, the 1984 film that also inspired an iconic soundtrack. With Purple Rain, Prince became the first artist ever to have the No. 1 movie, song, and album all at the same time. With the movie playing in the background, fans will get to see the keyboard, script, guitar, and wardrobe from the movie, along with one of the motorcycles Prince rides in the film and the Best Original Song Oscar he won for the title song.

While there, Roker got the opportunity to speak with two of Prince’s sisters, who said he had always planned for Paisley Park to one day become a museum.

“It’s truly Prince. He thought all this through. He had a vision, and he finished it,” said his older sister, Norrine Nelson.
