Tom Cruise Responds to 'Top Gun 2' Rumors
Tom Cruise was on The Graham Norton Show to promote his latest Jack Reacher film and was asked by the British talk show host about another movie sequel. “Is it true there’s going to be a Top Gun 2?” Norton asked. “No,” replied Cruise flatly.
It would seem like a given, in this age of endless sequels, that a Top Gun 2 would be made, even if it’s been 30 years since the first one came out. But in the years that have passed, a second installment has been delayed. Here’s a timeline of Top Gun 2 news.
In 2014, The Jungle Book writer Justin Marks was hired to write a script.
In 2015, one of the film’s producers, Skydance CEO David Ellison, said that Maverick would have an “amazing role” in the sequel.
Also in 2015, Val Kilmer shared on Facebook that he had been offered Top Gun 2, but then added, “This has been talked about for a long, long time, and being offered a role is very different from doing a role.”
And in January 2016, producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted, “Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”
So, yeah, this isn’t just hearsay. People who can make a Top Gun 2 have been talking about making a Top Gun 2. Norton mentioned the Bruckheimer tweet to Cruise. “Yes, we’re discussing it,” Cruise said. “We’re discussing it. We’re trying to figure it out.” Before you get too excited, Cruise said basically the exact same thing to Extra in 2015. “Jerry and I talked about it,” he said back then. “I don’t know. It’s tricky to figure out. If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do.”
