Tommy Stinson of The Replacements joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the deluxe reissue of the band’s classic 1985 album Tim, as well as the debut release of his new project Cowboys in the Campfire.

The singer-songwriter/bassist dives into the details of the new band, how he took inspiration from artists like Conway Twitty and Tanya Tucker, and having X’s John Doe guest on the album. He then turns his attention to the Tim reissue, an undertaking he admits the band was reluctant to get behind:

“If it were left to The Replacements — me, Paul, and Chris, that is — we would have never released any of this extra material, any of this extra stuff at all. We wouldn’t have done that, because there’s a reason that it didn’t make the record. There’s a reason why it’s been in the vault.” Stinson explains. “But because Bob [Mehr] has done such a good job with it and people are really revering them as quality things, we are uniquely in this place where our music is really relevant still.”

In addition to discussing why he’s usually not a fan of  of releasing demos, Stinson revisits the infamous Alex Chilton sessions and what it was like to hear Lorde cover the band’s “Swingin Party.”
