'I, Tonya' teaser: Margot Robbie flawlessly skates into Tonya Harding's body
The Cutting Edge this ain’t. Coming off its rapturous reaction at the Toronto International Film Festival — where Yahoo Entertainment called it one of the festival’s “hottest tickets” — the mockumentary-cum-biopic, I, Tonya, has released its first teaser trailer in advance of its Dec. 8 theatrical release. Directed by Craig Gillespie (of Lars and the Real Girl notoriety) the film stars a potentially Oscar-bound Margot Robbie as disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, who was infamously implicated in a scandal to harm rival Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. It’s a piece of American sports history that the Australian actress admitted she wasn’t familiar with before accepting the role. (Watch the trailer above.)
It’s safe to say that Robbie knows plenty about Harding’s rise and fall now, aided by American co-stars like Allison Janney, who plays the skater’s nightmare-inducing mother, LaVona Golden. Though she doesn’t have a big role in this trailer, The West Wing star has been singled out amongst the ensemble cast as a comic force to be reckoned with. We’d be down for a sequel: I, LaVona.
I, Tonya skates into theaters in New York and L.A. on Dec. 8.
