Tori Spelling reveals final conversation she had with Shannen Doherty: I’m ‘not doing well’
Tori Spelling is in her feelings following the death of Shannen Doherty.
On Tuesday’s episode of the “90210MG” podcast, Spelling reflected on the last conversation she had with her former “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-star, who died July 13 at age 53 after a years-long battle with breast cancer.
“I’ve had a lot of death in my life,” Spelling said. “And I don’t believe in regrets, but I have a lot of regrets that I didn’t have that time to have a second chance to get past stuff from the past and look at all the good things and really talk it out and have that last conversation.”
“And I feel like she and I had that, and I’m super grateful for that,” Spelling added.
Spelling’s co-host and fellow “90210” alum, Jennie Garth, said on the podcast she was happy Spelling reconnected with Doherty.
“We got to see each other once in a while, but I was thinking definitely of you, Tori, and how happy you must have been to have that time with her and to have that sort of just reconnection on a deeper level as both of you matured and grown and learned so much,” Garth, 52, explained.
“I wished that I had had that opportunity, because I didn’t really get to sit down and have like heartfelt conversation with her recently,” she added. “But I was very glad that you did.”
Spelling played Donna Martin on the 1990s series, which was co-created and executive produced by her late father, Aaron Spelling.
Doherty was on the first four seasons before her character, Brenda Walsh, was written off the show.
In 2015, Spelling admitted that she played a big part in Doherty losing her job. She claimed in the Lifetime special, “Tori Spelling: Celebrity Lie Detector,” that she told her dad that Doherty and Garth weren’t getting along to the point they almost had a physical fight.
Doherty and Garth didn’t always get along when they worked together. In Garth’s 2014 memoir, “Deep Thoughts From a Hollywood Blonde,” she said about Doherty: “There were times when we loved each other and there were times when we wanted to claw each other’s eyes out.”
However, Doherty reconciled with both of her former co-stars before her death.
During the podcast, Spelling admitted that she’s “not doing well” in the wake of Doherty’s passing.
Garth added: “It’s crazy that we could be shocked knowing that she was sick and knowing how hard she was fighting, but it still felt shocking.”
Spelling said: “I guess it was just that belief that she fought so hard and was such a warrior, and she has shown her entire life and career that she can get past anything. So although we know cancer is so evil and takes everyone that we love . . . I guess she made you believe that she was the one that would make it. And she was so hopeful.”
Garth admitted she “never thought” that Doherty would lose her battle to Stage 4 breast cancer. “It was just shocking,” she said. “And like, makes you mad, makes you pissed, mad, sad, all the feelings.”
Since the news of Doherty’s passing, the late star has been honored on social media by her former “90210” co-stars including Spelling, Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley and Gabrielle Carteris.
In her lengthy tribute to Doherty, Spelling said she was “grateful” that the actresses “got to go back in time as adult friends and remember why we truly loved each other to begin with.”
“Shan… I’ll carry the torch on. Take on my power! And, I’ll stay rebellious for you. Love you with all my heart. Always,” Spelling wrote.
Doherty passed away five years after her “90210” co-star Luke Perry died at the age of 52 in 2019.
More “90210” alums who have passed away in recent years include Denise Dowse, Joe E. Tata and David Gail.
