Tracee Ellis Ross Gives a Rare Update on Her Dating Life 10 Years After Her Last Public Romance
Tracee Ellis Ross might be ready for love after opting to put her career ahead of relationships for most of her adult life!
The award-winning actress and self-love advocate isn’t one to get candid about her dating life but in a revealing September 4 cover story with Byrdie, she opened up about why she’s ready for a relationship.

“I’ve always been about the work,” the Black-ish star, 51, said. “I work hard because I care about what I do. Up until I turned 50, my head was down doing the work. At 50, I looked back and realized I’ve done a lot of things. And there’s still a lot more for me to do.”
One “more” thing she’s looking for is love. “I am dreaming about partnership and what that might be,” Ross said. “I want something that will be additive to [my life.] I’m pretty much a unicorn, and I’m looking for another unicorn.”
The critically-acclaimed actress is, however, being careful with this quest for love. “One of the things I learned about myself early on is that I manifest quickly,” she said earlier in the interview. “So, I am very specific about my words and what I want.”
Ross’ last public relationship was with music manager Abou “Bu” Thiam, the younger brother of rapper Akon who is best known as Kanye West’s manager. Ross and Thiam dated from 2011 until 2013.
In 2016, Thiam opened up about their breakup during an appearance on The Breakfast Club, revealing that Ross’ career has always been a major priority for her. “I believe that being with somebody is … like a real job. It’s a real responsibility. She’s in a place in her career where if I can’t give her all of me, I don’t want to waste her time or put her in that space,” he said. “Why not give her the opportunity to find someone else that can?”
Ross has also vocalized her choice to remain single, childfree and focus on her career. “It’s really interesting to be a woman and to get to 45 and not be married and not have kids,” Ross told the audience at Glamour’s Women of the Year Summit in 2017. “I’m a good friend, a solid daughter, a hard worker, my credit is good, I take out the garbage before it gets smelly, I recycle, and I won a Golden Globe!”
Though her new chapter might involve a new relationship, as she told Byrdie, self-discovery continues to come first. She said: “I dream of being more myself, continuing to enjoy my life, and breathing deeply and fully into this next chapter.”
