Travis Kelce Admits Secret Service Did Actually Threaten to Taser Him at the White House
The Kansas City Chiefs were invited to the White House to be honored by President Joe Biden last Friday to celebrate their second Super Bowl championship in a row. But this time, Secret Service members had their eye on tight end Travis Kelce, and warned him in no uncertain terms that if he stepped out of line there would be consequences.
However, Biden both surprised and terrified Kelce by inviting him to to the podium, where he had been expressly forbidden to go. "My fellow Americans. It's nice to see you all yet again," the 34-year-old told the crowd. "I'm not gonna lie, President Biden, they told me if I came up here I'd get tased. So, I'm gonna go back to my spot."
As Kelce revealed on the latest episode of his New Heights podcast that he hosts with his brother, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, that wasn't a joke.
"That's real. The secret service that's all over the White House, they weren't too happy with me," he explained. "They weren't too happy with me on my second time visiting."
Travis admitted that he also got in trouble the first time around for having an expired ID, which he said he "caught s--t for that."
"I made sure that beforehand, because of what happened last time and how embarrassed I was for going to the White House with an expired ID, I made sure that I brought my passport this time," he continued. "So that it showed that I was a citizen in Missouri, and I was official and I was legit and I was doing things the right way because everyone has to do that at the White House."
"When I walked in, we had about four or five secret service members come up to me and tell me, 'You know that if you go up to that podium we're authorized to tase you,'" Travis recalled. "Yeah, just when you think you're being slick. 'It is actually ordered for us to tase you' ... It's gonna happen if you touch that f--king podium, son."
Last year, when presenting Biden with a Kansas City Chiefs jersey, Kelce's teammate Patrick Mahomes had to actually wrangle him away from the podium after he wandered up and decided to give some impromptu remarks.
"So that was all that was going through my head," Travis added. "I had no idea President Biden was gonna ask me to come up and let me have my moment."
"Well that's awesome, you nailed it," Jason then told him.
"He walked right up and the first thing he said was just give me the floor. And I felt taser aimed at me when I was up there, the whole time. I was up there," Travis quipped. "Don't make any quick movements."
If the president invites you up, you're not going to get tased," Jason interjected.
"Still, if I would have did something real fast or like real quick or like did something ... I don't know, I was just in my head. I'm like, dude, I'm about to get f--king tased, they warned me—f--k, Joe, you bear-trapped me," he said, laughing.
In the end, Travis marveled that it's always an honor to be invited to the White House.
"Any time that I get a chance to get recognized by the President of the United States and get to go with my teammates, and a group of men and women that I had success with to the point where we get to get acknowledged, man, I'm doing it every single time," he added. "No matter who's up there at the helm, no matter what's going on in this world, I think it's just such a cool opportunity."
