“Lisbon was recently recognized as the most innovative city in Europe, surpassing more than 250 cities — a milestone few thought possible,” said Mayor Carlos Moedas, thanking Tribeca co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal for acknowledging “the incredible journey the city has embarked on over the past three years.”
De Niro and Rosenthal are hosting a Lisboa kick-off reception in New York this afternoon with Mayor Moedas, U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Randi Charno Levine and Whoopi Goldberg, who will be part of a panel discussion at the fest called Laughter, Tears & Healing: The Power of Comedy and Drama in Mental Health (and Storytelling).
“Twenty-two years ago, Jane Rosenthal and I founded the Tribeca Festival to help revitalize lower Manhattan through the power of film, art, and storytelling. This mission remains our North Star,” De Niro said. “Each year, we aim to unify communities, ignite creativity, and inspire new waves of innovation. It means a great deal to us to bring this same spirit to Lisbon — a city bursting with renewed cultural and economic promise.”
Lisboa selections also include Portuguese premiere of Tony Goldwyn’s Ezra, followed by a talkback with De Niro, and the international premieres of A Bronx Tale, The Original One-Man Show followed by a Q&A with writer, director and star Chazz Palminteri; Jazzy, executive produced by Lily Gladstone; and Group Therapy, with comedians Neil Patrick Harris, Mike Birbiglia, Tig Notaro and others.
Panels will tackle topics from AI to streaming to storytelling with De Niro, Goldberg, filmmaker Patty Jenkins, actor Griffin Dunne and some of Portugal’s prominent entertainment voices including comedian, political commentator and journalist Ricardo Araújo Pereira, American-Portuguese actress and film director Daniela Ruah, and actor, TV presenter and comedian César Mour?o.
“For more than two decades, Tribeca has passionately championed independent filmmakers and emerging talent from across the globe,” said Rosenthal. “We’re proud to continue the tradition this fall.”
Tribeca is partnering on the fest with media conglomerate Impresa, whose assets include Portuguese broadcaster SIC and streaming platform OPTO. It will be held at the Beato Innovation District, a cultural hub set in a historic industrial complex.
The Tribeca Film Festival previously had an edition in Doha from 2019 to 2012. In 2006, it collaborated with the Rome Film Festival.
