Class with Trixie Mattel is officially in session.
The Drag Race legend is set to star in the upcoming FX comedy English Teacher, which stars series creator Brian Jordan Alvarez (Will & Grace, M3GAN) as Evan Marquez, a gay teacher living in Austin, Texas who “often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional, and political aspects of working at a high school,” per the official FX synopsis.
During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Alvarez said that Mattel will appear in the show’s second episode, playing a drag queen who teaches the school’s football players how to master their cheerleading skills ahead of a “politicized powderpuff game.” Kurt Hummel would be proud!
Alvarez told Vanity Fair that when it came to casting the role, “Trixie Mattel was number one on the list.”
Of course, Mattel is no stranger to the small screen. Outside of Drag Race, she’s appeared on many other reality shows, including her renovation docuseries Trixie Motel. Back in 2016, she took on serialized TV, playing herself in an episode of 2016’s American Horror: Story: Roanoke. It’s unclear whether the star will be promoting English Teacher as she’s currently taking an extended break from all drag-related endeavors. But luckily, Mattel’s screen presence more than speaks for itself.
The drag legend also talked to us about her Max home renovation show, DJing, and *The Sims*.
If you’re anything like me, you’re also already obsessed with the workplace misadventures at the heart of the ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary. In that case, I’d wager that English Teacher is shaping up to be an even queerer take on what it means to be a teacher today.
“People from every different part of life are basically forced to come together for a common goal, which is just to educate these kids,” Alvarez explained to Vanity Fair. “What we enjoy is this idea that obviously the teachers are teaching the kids, but sometimes the kids are teaching the teachers how to live in this modern world that’s moving so fast, [where] it feels like the rules change every day.”
In addition to Mattel, English Teacher stars gay actor Jordan Firstman (Rotting in the Sun, Ms. Marvel) as Malcolm, a former coworker, and Evan’s on-again, off-again boyfriend.
You can learn some cheer tips from Mattel when English Teacher’s two-episode premiere hits Hulu on Monday, September 2.
