TWD: Daryl Dixon’s Melissa McBride Defends Carol’s Dirty Premiere Trick
We know that desperate times call for desperate measures, but this? Wow. In the Season 2 premiere of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (recapped here), Carol doesn’t disclose to new acquaintance Ash that she wants a ride to France to search for her MIA bestie. She ensures that Ash won’t be able to turn down her request by telling the grieving father that it’s actually her alive-and-well daughter Sophia that she’s hoping to retrieve.
We were taken aback by the lie, and perhaps Carol was, too. “I think she surprises herself with that tactic,” Melissa McBride tells TVLine, “and it speaks to some of the inner turmoil [she’s experiencing over her own loss] expressing itself. That’s a heavy move to make, and it does weigh on her heavily.”

To her credit, Carol pumps the brakes before takeoff. “She has some second thoughts,” McBride notes, “and gives Ash an out, like, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ She’s checking in again and wants to know.
“This is a big deal,” she adds. “I’m manipulating a lot here. [She’s like,] ‘We can not do this.’ But he had a lot to say about getting out and seeing the world.”

So off they went. Happily, we won’t have to wait too much longer to see “Caryl” together again. (Read what McBride and Norman Reedus have to say about their characters’ reunion here.) How Ash will react when they pick up a gruff, grown man and not Carol’s little girl… well, that’s TBD.
