Twitter explodes after host calls Goo Goo Dolls 'classic rock group' at Rockefeller Center Christmas

The Goo Goo Dolls joined a plethora of high-profile performers like Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson at the 88th Annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center, but it wasn’t the band’s performances that set Twitter ablaze. When introducing their second performance, Today show host Craig Melvin referred to them as a “classic rock group,” and fans couldn’t help but suddenly feel old.

Melvin may have been right in calling the Goo Goo Dolls a classic rock group, considering the band formed in 1985. But it wasn’t until the mid-’90s that they finally hit it big with hits like “Long Way Down,” “Name,” “Iris” and “Slide.”

The Goo Goo Dolls are still making new music. The band just released a Christmas album called It’s Christmas All Over, and they played one of their new songs, “This Is Christmas.” And from the very first chord, it had that classic Goo Goo Dolls sound.
