Tyler Perry is expanding his deal with Netflix, adding TV series to the mix. Netflix announced Monday that it had added a multi-year, first-look series pact with Perry to the previous feature film pact he sealed in October with the streamer.

As part of the expanded relationship with Netflix, Perry is developing the 16-episode hour-long drama “Beauty in Black,” which he will write, direct and executive produce. According to Netflix, “‘Beauty in Black’ follows two women leading very different lives. While Kimmie is struggling to make a living after her mother kicked her out and Mallory is running a successful business, they find themselves entangled in each other’s lives.”

Angi Bones and Tony Strickland will also produce “Beauty in Black” for Tyler Perry Studios.

Perry’s deal with Netflix replaces the previous multiyear content partnership with Paramount Global that he sealed in 2017 (when the company was known as Viacom).

Perry has a separate ongoing relationship with BET, which he partnered with in 2019 to create content for both the cable network and its new streaming service, BET+. Over the course of four years, Perry created hit series like ‘Sistas” and “The Oval” (which recently hit its 100th episode). Those shows then spawned spinoffs including “Zatima” (featuring “Sistas” characters) and “Ruthless” (from “The Oval”). He has more than ten series at BET and remains a part owner of BET+.

Perry was among the moguls looking to purchase BET when Paramount Global briefly flirted with selling the company.

Perry’s new creative partnership with Netflix to write, direct and produce feature films under a multi-year, first-look deal, announced in October, spans eight pictures over four years. Perry’s upcoming films with Netflix include the World War II-set drama “Six Triple Eight,” starring Kerry Washington, and the thriller “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland.

Perry’s relationship with Netflix stretches back to previous films including “A Jazzman’s Blues,” “A Madea Homecoming” and “A Fall from Grace.”
