Tyler Perry And Netflix Lock First-Look Film Deal
Tyler Perry and Netflix have new projects on the horizon. According to Variety, the filmmaker and the streamer have confirmed a creative partnership with the 54-year-old set to write, direct, and produce feature films under a multi-year, first-look deal.
WME CEO Ari Emanuel teased the agreement during Bloomberg Media’s Screentime conference earlier this month. At the time, Perry did not verify the collaboration.
“It hasn’t been announced yet, so I’ll wait for them to announce it,” explained Perry to Bloomberg. “But yeah, Netflix has been an incredible partner to work with, and so is Amazon. It’s been really, really, really incredible, and that’s all I’ll say about it.”
Currently, the acclaimed director has three films on Netflix, which include A Fall From Grace, A Madea Homecoming, A Jazzman’s Blues as well as the pending films Six Triple Eight and Mea Culpa. No new or specific projects were announced with the news of the deal. The number of films slated to be produced or the agreement’s length of time were also not disclosed.
Six Triple Eight stars Oprah Winfrey alongside Kerry Washington and Sam Waterston. The film is centered around the true, historic efforts of the sole all-Black, all-female World War II postal directory battalion that was a crucial component of the American war effort.
Mea Culpa brings Kelly Rowland together with Trevante Rhodes, Sean Sagar, Nick Sagar, and RonReaco Lee. The thriller explores the story of a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend in his quest to become partner.
