Tyrese Gibson Reveals His Hatred For ‘Baby Boy’ Co-Star Ving Rhames: “F**k That Ni**a”

Tyrese Gibson has revealed his deep disdain for actor and Baby Boy co-star Ving Rhames due to the sheer realism of his performance in the film.

During an appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Gibson recounted his role as Jody Summers in the film and how the tense encounters between his character and Rhames’ was reflective of their interactions offscreen.

According to Tyrese, his experience as the son of a single mother and witnessing her relationships with men was triggered during scenes with Rhames, who put forth a widely acclaimed performance as Melvin, an ex-con boyfriend to Jody’s mother, Juanita (A.J. Johnson).

“I was not acting in Baby Boy,” Gibson told Million Dollaz Worth of Game cohosts Gillie Da Kid and Wallo upon mention of the cult classic film. “That ni**a Ving Rhames definitely triggered the sh*t out of me. I don’t like the ni**a to this day,” he added.

The singer said that his hatred of Rhames runs so deep that he’s still unnerved when in the presence of his former castmate, regardless of the time or venue. “I run into that ni**a to this day. I don’t give a f**k where we at, what clothes we got on, what we doing, what event — it could be the Golden Globes — I see that ni**a across the room I be like, ‘Man, fuck that ni**a back there,'” Gibson insisted.

Released in 2001 and directed by John Singleton, Baby Boy included a cast featuring Taraji P. Henson, Snoop Dogg, Omar Gooding, and more. The film was deemed a success, debuting at No. 5 at the box office upon its release, grossing nearly $30 million worldwide, nearly double its reported budget.

Several years ago, Tyrese hinted at plans for a Baby Boy sequel, tentatively titled Baby Boy: Coming Of Age. However, the project, which was rumored as being under production as recently as 2017, appears to have been nixed in light of Baby Boy director John Singleton’s death in 2019.
