Ugly Dumpling Express has plans for this old burger joint at the Commons at Holmdel
HOLMDEL - Ugly Dumpling Express, a new quick-service restaurant chain, will make its debut on Route 35 sometime this summer, taking over a spot once home to a burger place.
The new restaurant will feature a scaled-down menu of its sister restaurant, Ugly Dumpling, which opened last week in Edison. It includes recipes inspired by Shanghai street food, including dumplings and buns, wontons and soup dumplings.
It is at the Commons at Holmdel shopping center in a space formerly occupied by Cheeburger Cheeburger, a burger restaurant, which closed in 2020 after 10 years at the center.
A spokesperson said Ugly Dumping expects to open its Holmdel location by midsummer. It will be the among the first Ugly Dumpling Express locations. Others are planned for Jersey City and Yonkers, New York, according to its website.

Ugly Dumpling is part of Vertex Hospitality Group, a food and beverage company that includes KPot Hot Pot & Korean BBQ and Hook & Reel Cajun Seafood & Bar. KPot is on an expansion streak at the Jersey Shore with restaurants planned for Hazlet, Neptune and Toms River.
On its website, Ugly Dumpling said its plans to open more than 1,000 of its express locations by 2027.
