Ulery recognized at state house
Mar. 11—North Decatur High School Director of Bands Reed Ulery was recently recognized for his contribution to Arts in Education.
Presented by the Indiana Arts Education Network in cooperation with the Indiana State School Music Association and the Indiana Music Educators Association, the presentation took place at noon Feb. 27 at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.
Ulery was recognized for fostering growth in the instrumental music programs at North Decatur and for taking the Decatur County Marching Band to the finals in the annual State Fair Band Day at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Ulery teaches 160 students at North Decatur and 50 students who participate in the Decatur County Marching Band. He teaches Senior High Band, Junior High Band, Elementary Band, Pep Band and Jazz Band.
"It's a lot of fun to get to inspire people in ways they might not have thought about before," Ulery said. "Music is something many of my students might not have enjoyed, but when they realize how fun it is they light up, and that's awesome."
Ulery is in his third year as Director of Bands for North Decatur. He attended Indiana University where he earned a Bachelor's in Music Education. His studied instrument is the French horn.
