'I was uneducated': Camila Cabello issues apology for 'horrible and hurtful language'

Charles Trepany, USA TODAY

Camila Cabello is apologizing for past regrets.

The "Se?orita" singer took to her Twitter and Instagram story Wednesday to tell fans she's "deeply ashamed of and will regret forever" language she used when she was younger.

"I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed i ever used it," she wrote.

Though Cabello did not specify which words she was apologizing for, the former Fifth Harmony singer has been accused of using racial remarks in now deleted Tumblr accounts. This week, social media users posted screenshots of old and offensive posts from a deactivated account said to have belonged to Cabello, prompting the apology.

"I apologized then and I apologize again now," she added. "I would never intentionally hurt anyone and I regret it from the bottom of my heart . As much as I wish I could, I can't go back in time and change things I said in the past. But once you know better, you do better and that's all I can do."

The 22-year-old wrote she's "grown" and become "conscious and aware of the history and the pain it carries in a way I wasn't before."

"Those mistakes don't represent the person I am or a person I've ever been," she continued. "I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity, and my heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate or divisiveness. The truth is I was embarrassingly ignorant and unaware."

'I am SOBBING': Camila Cabello's new album 'Romance' has fans in their feelings

Cabello capped off her post noting she'll continue using her platform "to speak out about injustice and inequality."

"I can't say enough how deeply sorry and ashamed I feel, and I apologize again from the bottom of my heart," she wrote.

USA TODAY has reached out to Cabello's reps for further comment.

Cabello's apology drew mixed reactions on Twitter, with many criticizing the singer and others defending her.

"Girl...what are they teaching the girls in US?" wrote user @MasaDiamond_. "Are you telling me at 16 this lady didn’t know what racism was???? I’m so confused"

"Being young is not an excuse for racism, of course she should apologise," added @lostinmyhead98.

Others took to Twitter to support the singer.

"I'm 100% black, and I fully support her," user @J990W wrote. "I understand that Hispanic people from Miami say (expletive) a lot, and I also think getting worked up over tweets by a middle schooler 8 years ago is whack..."

"you don't need to apologize, you were young and u didn't do it again so u r fine queen," wrote @hellboiclique.
