Justin Bieber was asked to join Usher’s Super Bowl halftime show, but declined. Usher says he understood the reasons, but didn’t elaborate on them.

In a preview clip from an upcoming interview on The Breakfast Club, Usher said, “I think that it might’ve been the fact that he’s just wanting to tell a different story right now, and I understand that. But we did have a brief conversation, and we’re gonna do something else in the future. No love lost or anything like that.”

Usher added that “Justin wasn’t the only person that I actually spoke to about doing the Super Bowl, but the moment was maybe for later,” he said. Chris Brown, he said, was not among those asked, as had been rumored.

Going forward, Usher was charitable toward his protégé. “He’s gonna play the Super Bowl. I’ll go ahead and give you that in the future. I profess that over his life. Because he has a career that deserves it.”

That Bieber was not a part of the show surprised many. Usher was an early mentor to Bieber, and collaborated with him on songs like “Somebody to Love.”

Bieber and wife Hailey were in attendance at the game and were captured dancing at halftime.
