Vanessa Kirby Thriller Package ‘Off Season’ From Script By Andrew Sodroski Snapped Up By Apple
EXCLUSIVE: In a highly competitive situation, Apple has landed rights to develop Off Season, a spec from Holland, Michigan‘s Andrew Sodroski, which Academy Award nominee Vanessa Kirby (Napoleon) will star in and produce through her Aluna Entertainment, according to our sources.
While specifics as to the film’s plot haven’t been disclosed, it’s described as a femme fatale thriller set in a luxury resort on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera. 42 developed the script, with Peter Dealbert and Ben Pugh to produce for the company, alongside Kirby and Lauren Dark for Aluna Entertainment. On a tear of late with roles in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon opposite Joaquin Phoenix, Kirby will next be seen starring in Ron Howard’s thriller Eden, which is coming off of its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Currently in production in the UK on the highly anticipated The Fantastic Four: First Steps, in which she plays Sue Storm aka the Invisible Woman, she’ll also be seen starring opposite Jennifer Jason Leigh in the drama Night Always Comes from Benjamin Caron, who directed her on Netflix’s The Crown. That Netflix pic also hails from her Aluna, a production company exploring the spectrum of the female experience, which launched under a multi-year first look deal with the streamer.
Sodroski is the scribe behind Holland, Michigan, an upcoming suburban thriller starring Nicole Kidman, Gael García Bernal and Matthew Macfadyen, which Mimi Cave directed for Amazon MGM Studios, with 42 and Blossom Films producing. Most recently, he inked a deal to write and exec produce a Netflix series based on ’70s Philadelphia’s Main Line Murders, with Jason Bateman’s Aggregate coming aboard to produce. Prior to that, he was set to showrun, write and exec produce The 500, a series adaptation of the novel from The Night Agent‘s Matthew Quirk for Amazon MGM Studios. He’s also sold Netflix on a pitch for an untitled law school thriller, which 42 will produce, and was previously WGA Award-nominated for his work on the true crime anthology series, Manhunt.
Most recently releasing the popular heist thriller The Instigators, starring Casey Affleck and Matt Damon, who we told you are in early talks for a sequel, Apple’s Clooney-Pitt action comedy Wolfs will hit theaters via Sony on September 20, after world premiering at Venice, making its streaming debut on September 27. The streamer’s buzzy Steve McQueen drama Blitz, starring Saoirse Ronan, premieres as the opening film of the BFI London Film Festival on October 9.
Kirby is repped by CAA, Hamilton Hodell in the UK, Linden Entertainment, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole; Sodroski by CAA, 42 and attorney David Fox of Myman Greenspan Fox.
